As I mentioned in Analyzing Basics – Dasas (I), Vimshottari is a dasa which is applicable to all. (except perhaps the very old, the very young or mentally challenged where the mental faculties are very poor as signified by Moon)

Certain dasa systems are applicable when certain criteria is met ONLY. An important point to note here is that the great sage Parasara (father of Jyotish) established that when more than 1 dasas are applicable in a horoscope, the ‘Rarer’ one should be given prime importance.

So as a default take Vimshottari to be applicable to everyone (100%) or atleast >90% of individuals

Now lets take an example of Chaturseeti Sama dasa. This dasa is applicable ONLY if 10th lord is in the 10th house of the horoscope. Statistically speaking, 1/12th of people will have 10th lord in the 10th house. This implies 100 x 1/12 or 8.34% of people.

Now it is clear that 8.34% is much more rare than more than 90% of people. hence in this case, give Chaturseeti Sama dasa more importance than Vimshottari. BUT keep in mind Vimshottari is always applicable and hence can not be ignored!

I explained how Vimshottari is calculated in the last writeup. I will not be explaining the mathematics behind the special dasas I mention here due to the fact that each has a detailed logic which requires a lot of analysis. At this stage this is not required for the reader. Good news is that JHora will give you all these dasas, if you need them and the need for manual calculation does not arise

Underlying theme for all planetary dasas remains the same. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd level planetary periods are important to analyze carefully along with transits to dictate events during any given time for the native.

I give some important conditional dasa systems below for the knowledge of the reader-

(1) Chaturseeti Sama Dasa as I already mentioned is applicable when 10th lord is in the 10th house (Rarity = 8.34% of population)

(2)Dwi-Saptati Sama Dasa – Applicable when Lagna lord is in the 7th house OR 7th lord is in the Lagna (Rarity = 16.68% of population)

(3) Shat-Trimsa Sama Dasa – Applicable when birth is daytime in Sun’s Hora or at night time in Moon’s Hora. Hora = hour lord or the planet that rules the hour of birth. This is seen as an output on front page of JHora. (Rarity = 11.11% of population)

(4) Dwadasottari Dasa – If Lagna is in Venusian Amsa. Amsa can be many kinds. So the definition will change as per the reader hence a bit controversial. I take Navamsa as the meaning. (Rarity = 16.67% of population)

(5) Sataabdika Dasa – If Lagna is Virgottam. Meaning the same sign rising in the ascendant and the Navamsa. (Rarity = 11.11% of population)

(6) Panchottari Dasa – If langa has Cancer in D1 and Cancer is rising in D12 divisional chart as well. (Rarity <1% of population)

(7) Shashti- Hayani Dasa – If Sun is in the Lagna. (This does sound a bit vague but nonetheless can be a good research topic. I have not yet correlated this dasa with many case studies) (Rarity = 8.34% of population)

As you notice when any of these dasas are applicable in a chart, they will be more ‘Rare’ than Vimshottari. But importantly 2 of these might be applicable example a chart can have Sun in lagna and 10th lord in 10th. In this case 3 dasas are applicable – Vimshottari, Shashti – Hayani & Chaturseeti Sama dasa

Now in the above bullets, you will notice that out of these Shashti Hayani and Chaturseeti sama dasa are applicable in 8.34% of the people. So what should the astrologer do?

Typically see if Sun is stronger than the 10th lord sitting in 10th in terms of shadbala, dignities and other factors we have already learnt in some of the lessons before. It becomes a judgement call. The Stronger one will have the prominent dasa.
That said, in reality all will operate to some extent. Meaning all the 3 above as Vimshottari is always applicable.

Point is not to overwhelm the astrologer, but to help support or negate events that she sees in one dasa in another dasa system.

Manjula peiris astrology. An important Observation here for the reader is that many of these conditional dasa systems DO NOT recognize Rahu/ Ketu in the planetary periods. The underlying cause is that these dasas are giving prominence to something Other than the Moon (from which Vimshottari is calculated). Rahu/ Ketu are the Nodes of the Moon and act on a subconscious level as strong Karmic forces from previous lives. Their applicability is more from a Lunar perspective than otherwise and hence the absence of these periods in some of the Conditional dasas.
